Developing the champion mindset

Yesterday I gave a talk on this topic to some junior players in Kansai and today I wanted to share with you what I covered in that talk.

Any tennis player can become a champion.

But first, they have to develop the right mindset to compete.

Whatever type of tennis player you think you are becoming, it is what you will eventually become.

“Also, whatever image you create in your mind about your tennis game, it will come true for you in your matches.”

The champion has 3 things that other tennis players do not have.

And they are,

The right attitude

All champions have the right attitude on and off the court.

They know that attitudes win 70% of their matches.

This allows them to fight in those tough matches, when they don’t have their A game with them.

I love how Novak can win some of the ugliest matches!

The reason is: “He always gives them the right attitude.”

And that shows you that it doesn’t matter what it looks like.

As long as you win the match!

Champions win ugly sometimes.

Longed for

The Champions League wants so much to become the best that they think about it all the time.

They have a deep desire within them to become Champions.

“And they won’t let anything or anyone get in their way.”

They are hungry and you can see that hunger in their eyes when they compete.

My coach used to tell me sometime during games.

“I don’t see the will to compete in your eyes, Thomas.”

Eyes never lie, right?

To persist

The Champions is always consistent with their mental game.

They bring it in to practice with them every day.

And by doing this, they can develop the right mindset to compete.

Champions win their matches in training.

What brings us to you.

On a scale of 1 to 5, where 1 is the highest, where do you rank?

After you qualify, write down some action steps you can take to improve in all 3 areas immediately.

I can tell you this.

The key to developing the mindset of a champion is studying them as much as you can right now.

Then stay consistent with your actions and your reactions to pressure on the court.

One more thing.

Do each practice better than the last!

Good luck guys!
