Dr. Victor A Carreño – NASA Engineer and Technologist

Born in 1956 in the city of Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic, Dr. Víctor A. Carreño works as an Aerospace Engineer and Aerospace Technologist for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration or NASA. He is also the man behind the creation and development of the Single Frequency Multi-Transmitter Telemetry System (SFMTS).

Although Carreño was born in the Dominican Republic, his family immigrated to Puerto Rico when he was just a child. Therefore, Carreño grew up in the city of Guaynabo. He developed his interest in electronics and mathematical problems as a child. He attended Margarita Janer Palacios High School where he graduated with honors and obtained the highest grade in both math and science in 1974.

The same year, Carreño attended the University of Puerto Rico where he earned his Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering four years later. After graduating, he submitted his application to NASA and was accepted. He was assigned to the Aircraft Electronics Systems Branch, NASA Flight Electronics Division. In 1983, Carreño was reassigned to the Fault Tolerant Systems Branch, where his job is to develop techniques to analytically evaluate digital system disturbances caused by lightning-induced transients.

In 1983, Carreño invented the Multi-Frequency Transmitter Telemetry System. In 1985, he completed his Masters in Electrical Engineering from Old Dominian University. A year later, he received a patent for his SFMTS invention and was granted US Patent No. 4,631,538.

In 1997, Carreño completed his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Cambridge in England. Ten years later, he retired from NASA. With all the significant contributions that Dr. Víctor A. Carreño has given, he is a source of pride not only for the Dominican flag but also for the Puerto Rican flag.
