Facts and buying guide for LED TVs

“LED TVs” are actually LCD TVs, but they’re called that because of the LED backlight technology used in them. Samsung, a leading manufacturer of consumer electronics, has been asked to explicitly state in their marketing announcements that the LED TVs they are selling are not actually pure LEDs, but rather LCD TVs that are equipped with LED technology.

In technical terms, this means that the LED televisions that are sold are actually televisions with LED lighting technology that, depending on the mechanism, can be backlit or edge-lit. In LED backlit TVs, there is a panel of LEDs right at the back of the main LCD screen that is programmed to produce less or more light depending on the mechanism to improve the quality of the image on the LCD screen. Edgelit TVs have a mechanism where LEDs are installed on the edges which then aim the light to the required areas on the screen. This also allows LCD TVs to become slimmer than before.

LED LCDs are up to a third thinner than pure LCDs due to the very small size of the LED compared to the CCFL (Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp) used in LCD TVs. LED LCD televisions are capable of creating more vivid images along with a far superior color spectrum and contrast. Viewing angles have also improved and can now rival those generated by plasma televisions.

Although these factors are of immense importance in making the overall performance of LED LCD TVs superior, the main argument used in selling these TVs is their low power consumption. Edge-lit LEDs consume around 40% less power compared to LCD TVs because the mercury-free LEDs used in edge-lit LEDs use much less electricity to light.

Many manufacturers also add a lot of eco-friendly and energy-saving mechanisms to these LEDs, so this can reduce your electricity bills and carbon footprint.

A large number of new ranges of LED televisions have recently been launched on the market. Samsung has introduced super slim models that are less than 1″ thick, Sony has introduced an individually controlled LED panel that is backlit, Toshiba has introduced a new LED backlit mechanism with a 240 KHz display panel, LG has jumped in with 240 KHz TruMotion LED Sharp has also introduced an ultra-bright LED system.

With so many variations and models available for LED TVs, it is good to do some deep research and then choose the model and brand that suits your requirements and budget as well.
