Juggling games with balls (Stredging, racing, combat, etc.)

If you are a member of a juggling club or visit juggling conventions, or just hang out with many other jugglers on a regular basis, you may be interested in some fun games that you can play. Some of them require the ability to juggle and some do not, so you will be able to find one that is suitable for whatever your abilities are. Enjoy!

Stredging: The objective is to catch all the balls successfully from the kicks of your companions. You need 5 balls arranged in a straight line on the ground. The game is played in teams of 2 people. One person is the catcher and the other has to kick / lift the balls to get them caught (either in the person’s hands or in a bowl or sack). It is best to practice this event with your partner before the game starts so that you can find the best technique and also who is the best receiver. A variation of this game would be that there is another row of 5 balls, and the roles are swapped after the first 5 balls have been caught so that the pitcher becomes the catcher. With both games, the fastest team is the winner.

Race: A destination is chosen (at British Juggling Convention Brighton we ran to the seafront and back to the playground) and the only rule is that you have to run back and forth while constantly juggling, and the first person to come back is the winner. If someone drops an object, they are declared “out” or a 3 second penalty is applied before they can continue running. Beware of many people cheating!

Simon says: Everyone juggles 3 balls and the caller yells what moves they need to do next. If they don’t say the words “Simon Says” before a command, and people follow the command, they are out! If they drop a ball at any time, they are out! Good game for children.

Wheelbarrow race for 3 people: Two people each grab one leg of the “wheelbarrow person,” and they have to juggle a 3-ball cascade between them as they drive the wheelbarrow to the finish line.

Combat: Two jugglers are standing back to back in a defined small area and both are juggling 3 balls. At an agreed signal, the two jugglers have to push their opponent out of the circle by backing up against each other. The first person to drop a ball or get pushed out of the circle loses. Don’t kick or elbow your opponent!
