2005 GMC Sierra Hybrid accented with GMC Parts from Parts Train

A standard 5.3-liter Vortec 5300 V8 engine powers the Sierra Hybrid and a Hydra-Matic 4-speed automatic transmission along with the first hybrid powertrain technology in the full-size truck segment for improved fuel economy.

The Sierra hybrid uses electrical power less frequently. Your gas engine can turn off when the car is stationary (actually, when it brakes to a stop, below 13 mph) and that’s it. Batteries (three 14-volt units plus the standard 12-volt) cannot power the truck at low speeds. They also do not help the gasoline engine, which therefore cannot be smaller. It’s the same 5.3-liter GM V-8 truck that buyers know and love. Due to the limited nature of this hybrid system, the benefits are slight: approximately 2 mpg in the city and 1 mpg during the EPA highway cycle.

The system replaces the traditional starter motor and alternator with a compact 14 kW electric induction motor or a starter generator integrated between the engine and transmission. The starter generator provides quick and quiet starting power and allows the gasoline engine to automatically start and stop under certain conditions to save fuel.

The Sierra Hybrid also offers four 120-volt / 20-amp auxiliary electrical outlets located under the rear seat and in the truck bed. Because the 5.3-liter V-8 engine is the same as the non-hybrid trucks, its power and torque are the same (295 horsepower, 325 pound-feet of torque). Acceleration, towing and payload do not decrease. The additional hybrid equipment takes up very little space: the largest component, the three additional batteries, is under the rear seat. A nice feature of the hybrid trucks are their four 120-volt, 20-amp AC outlets in the cargo bed and rear seat; but the engine must be running in order to use them.

As in hybrid cars, the gasoline engine shuts down at traffic lights to save fuel and is restarted by an electric motor when the accelerator pedal is pressed. Unlike most hybrids, the electric motor does not help propel the vehicle. The system includes a unique feature aimed at commercial users and fans of picnics: a generator that provides 120-volt power for the operation of electrical accessories.

Available in California, Washington, Oregon, Alaska, Nevada and Florida, the Sierra Hybrid offers up to 10% more fuel economy with the same power and performance as the 5.3-liter V8. In fact, that same engine powers the hybrid, developing the same 295 horsepower and 335 pound-feet of torque.
