How to Spot Ancient Egyptian Furniture

Egyptian men used two types of chairs. The first type was made of wood with a seat that curved slightly inward. This design was probably to make sitting more comfortable.

This type of chair was built with three wooden legs, which curved outwards. The chair was simple in design and purpose built for long term use. Could withstand constant daily rough treatment. This type of chair could easily be placed in a modern kitchen and would not look out of place.

The second type of chair used by Egyptian men had a more elaborate design. This type of chair had cross supports and could be folded or collapsed for easy transport.

The lower part of the legs of this chair were carved and molded with the heads of geese. Ivory was attached to this type of meat. The end result was a splendid piece of furniture.

Most of the ancient Egyptian furniture is extremely old, dating from 1500 to 1400 B.C. C. And it is believed that some furniture found in Egypt is three thousand years old. Some even come out much older.

Egyptian craftsmen were extremely talented and made rails and furniture legs as if using a modern lathe. Perfect fitting mortise and tenon joints that look like they were machine made.

Small wooden boxes were made, probably to store jewelry. Some were inlaid with small squares of blue ceramic and were colored a brilliant turquoise. Other boxes were inlaid with ivory veneer.

Spoons made of wood have been found, with various designs intricately carved on them. Much of this work required artistic men with great skill in carving the many designs.

Different types of wood were used to make Egyptian furniture. Many types of furniture were made of ebony. This is a jet black heavy hardwood. Ebony takes on a high shine and was ideal for the Egyptians, when making carvings, woodwind instruments and knife handles, as well as furniture. Ebony was also used to make some types of Egyptian jewelry.

Another type of wood that the Egyptians used to make furniture was cedar. This is a type of hard, yellow, sweet-smelling wood. Cedar is also used today to make furniture and to build houses.

Other types of wood were also used to make Egyptian furniture besides the two mentioned.
