Personal development lies

Have you ever bought something only to find out along the way that you didn’t actually get what you thought you were buying … that you have actually been scammed?

Of course yes.

I also.

We all have.

“But with these pills I am destined to lose 14 pounds in 14 days … without getting off the couch!”

“Hey, isn’t this phone supposed to do neck rubs, make cappuccino … and land the space shuttle?”

The hype and hype just didn’t match the product.

Businesses overpromise and consistently fail … it’s an old trick called ‘sell stuff’!

“Oh … you want a steering wheel with that car Mr. Harper … well that’s an option”

Don’t let the facts get in the way of a good story!

Well, this also happens in the world of Personal Development.

Shock, horror.

I know it’s hard to believe that someone cares more about telling you what you want to hear or making money than helping you … but try to understand.

Crazy concept, I know.

Am I doing the sarcasm again?

Sorry.

Sure, there are some amazing and genuine people who are doing their best to ‘be the change’ … and then there are those who are selling lies or at least half truths.

Too many ‘aspiring experts’ defend messages that are misleading, unrealistic, impractical, and potentially dangerous. Good for selling books, not so good for creating real life results … it changes forever.

In a culture that is desperate for a shortcut (we are the quick fix generation) it is easy to sell lies because many of us don’t want to buy the truth … it is not that attractive. We spend millions every day on weight loss products because we get sucked into terms like ‘quick, easy, quick and painless’ … and we keep getting fat … because all that shit doesn’t work !!

“Yeah, I’m going to get myself some of those seven minute abs !!”

Good luck with that.

It’s true, we are an incredibly naive society, desperate to find an easy way rather than the most effective way.

We don’t need any more theories or shortcuts of “success”, we need practical, proven, common sense, results-based strategies.

More reality, less fluff.

More honesty, less glare.

How long will we keep complicating the simple?

Reinventing the self-help wheel?

Going around in ever-expanding circles of personal development?

In how many different ways can we say the same thing?

If we were to believe a few people, it’s a wonder some of us accomplished something before they hit the personal development landscape with their new “hit” systems and programs.

Good luck for us.

Call me crazy, call me old-fashioned … but I (stupidly) still accept some of those crazy archaic notions like self-control, discipline, planning, determination, focus, passion, commitment, and hard work.

I know, I’m out of date.

So out of touch.

Hard work … there is a term that you will not see in any advertising literature … it cannot be sold!

The reality is that creating our best life and reaching our potential will always involve a level of pain, discomfort, blood, sweat, tears, and commitment. But try to find that information on the cover of a self-help book or in the advertisement for any personal development program.

I won’t be too specific about books, programs, or individuals (I have an aversion to litigation), but let’s just say it would be good for you to question, explore, and consider for yourself before buying someone else’s (version of) reality. , success or change.

I always tell my audience “don’t believe me … just listen, consider what I say and then judge for yourself. See if anything I say resonates within you.” You need to find your own truth among the growing mountain of personal development information.

Is it possible to create amazing and mind-blowing results in our life?

Absolutely.

Is it quick, easy, simple and painless?

Usually not.

Is it worth the effort?

Absolutely.

I’m at the front of the queue when it comes to encouraging people to create their own amazing life … relationships, health, career, finances, happiness, fun. And while I believe that most of us are exploding with talent and potential and can do and achieve amazing things, I am also passionate about teaching people the realistic, simple approach, this is what really works to create the best of themselves. life.

I care what happens when the ‘Guru’ leaves the city, the exaggeration and the ‘motivation’ have calmed down, you are not ‘in condition’, you are not ‘in the zone’, your back hurts a little, kids scream, bills go up, and the emotional impact of the workshop, book, seminar, DVD, or CD is gone. Creating change forever isn’t about moments of motivation and inspiration … and it’s not about books, programs, or even this article; it’s about what you do throughout your life.

Some of my favorite lies (?):

The lie: you deserve it.

The truth: you earn it, you believe it, you work for it.

The lie: if you can conceive it, you can achieve it.

The truth: not always. I can imagine running a hundred meters in nine seconds all I want … but it’s not going to happen. I can imagine myself being a rock star in front of 50,000 screaming fans … but sadly no chance, some talent is needed too. It is great to visualize and create a mental image, it is also advisable to be practical and realistic.

The lie: motivation will get you there.

The truth: it won’t be like that, motivation comes and goes. It’s about commitment, that’s what keeps us going when motivation is lacking. It’s about being fully emotionally invested in that endeavor, so that even when you don’t ‘feel like it,’ keep doing what you need to do to create your desired results. When most people have thrown in the towel, you persevere.

The lie: if it’s meant to be, the Universe will deliver it to you.

The truth: that’s bullshit. The Universe doesn’t give a shit about you.

As I have said before, the traditional concept of destiny is the refuge of the weak. It is for lazy and fearful people who don’t want to move and take charge of their own life. Some people would have you believe that your future is a predetermined event in which you are an unwitting participant. Enjoy that reality … the rest of us will be here creating our own amazing future.

The lie: This book, program, CD, DVD, web … will change your life.

The truth: you will change your life.
