Is a Disney World Resort Right for You?

stay on or off site

So you decided to visit Walt Disney World this year? Now the fun begins as you plan everything you want to see and do. As you plan all the details of your trip, you’ll first need to decide where you’d like to stay in Orlando. If you research all the hotels available in the Orlando area, you will be overwhelmed by the number of options available to you.

With thousands of hotel rooms in the area, from on-site Disney hotels to off-site large and small hotel chains, you really have to make some decisions before choosing one. To determine what will work best for you, you need to consider both your budget and the needs of your travel group.

The number of people in your group and their ages and needs should guide you where you should stay when you visit Walt Disney World. Large groups usually benefit from suite hotels or even renting a house for the duration of their stay, as most hotel rooms are set up for a total of 4 people (2 adults and 2 children). Travelers with young children like to be close to the theme parks and enjoy being able to get to and from the parks to the hotel with ease. The ages of your travelers should also be taken into account as some of the family budget hotels may not be enjoyed by seniors or honeymooners.

The hotels on the Disney site offer several options in the area of prices and features. Staying onsite at Disney comes with some benefits you can’t get offsite. They include “park overtime,” which allows hotel guests to visit the parks one hour before their scheduled opening hours and up to three hours after closing hours. This feature applies to one park per day and rotates each day of the week. On-site hotels also offer Disney’s Magical Express service, which provides transportation to and from the Orlando airport, including the ability to skip baggage claim, as Disney picks up your luggage for you.

Staying on site also includes guaranteed park admission, even when the parks are full. This only helps when traveling during the actual peak times of the year.

Off-site hotels are plentiful in the Orlando area. Some hotels are less than a mile from Disney property and are very convenient to the parks. Typically, an off-site hotel will offer more bang for the buck, compared to a Disney value or moderate-type hotel. All major chain hotels (Embassy Suites, Holiday Inn and Sheraton) can be found in the Orlando area. When booking a room outside of Disney, it makes sense to get referrals from family or friends who have stayed at those hotels. Otherwise, stick with a major hotel chain and check the hotel online for reviews.

Deciding where to stay for your vacation is an important decision to make. If you want the full Disney experience, or feel like you need the ability to travel to and from the theme parks the easy way, you can choose a hotel on-site. If you plan to rent a car, are traveling to other parks (Sea World, Universal), or are on a budget and want to get the best value for your money, look for an off-site hotel deal.

Wherever you decide to stay, you can be sure that Orlando offers great entertainment for travelers and continues to rank as a top tourist destination.
