Tips to keep in mind when choosing a server cabinet

If you are going to design a data center, the first most important thing is to choose the right cabinet for the server racks. However, this selection is not as simple as you might think. The idea is to make the most of the available space to achieve maximum efficiency. Below are a couple of factors that you may want to consider when opting for server cabinets.

Determine your needs

First of all, what you need to do is decide on the best rack units to meet your needs. In case you didn’t know, a rack unit provides a standard that you can use to measure your rack mount equipment.

Basically, a rack unit is 44.45 mm or 1.75 inches tall. This unit is also known as a “1U”. Most server cabinets are available in 48U, 44U, 42U, and 40U cabinets.

If you want to measure the internal space, you can multiply the number of units by 1.75. Let’s take an example. Its 44U cabinet provides 77 inches of internal space. Let’s say you want to include 20 2U units in your data center. In this case, you may want to go for a 44U cabinet as it will provide you with plenty of space.

Based on these measurements, you can buy as many units as you need. It all comes down to your needs and budget.

Fit and Dimensions

If you want to get a better idea of the dimensions that will fit your available space, you may want to find out what type of equipment you want to install in the cabinets. Here’s an important tip: you may want to get a few more cabinets for future expansions.

Basically, it’s best to add at least 10% extra space, since you won’t be able to fit rack units once you’ve purchased your server cabinets. Aside from this, it is important to note that units must go through stairs and doorways. In addition, they must comply with other authorization regulations of the facility in which they are to be installed.

Aesthetic and functional requirements

You may also want to consider aesthetic and functional elements when shopping for server cabinets. In other words, for better management of a server, you may want to ensure that the cabling, cooling, and power layout are managed properly.

If you want to get a better idea of the cabinet’s power distribution requirements, you can consider the redundancy, outlet, plug, and AMP requirements. For the proper functioning of the servers, good ventilation is also necessary.

With blank panels, you can dramatically improve the look. Plus, they can cover up unused space and make your cabinet look more complete, especially if the front and back doors are made of glass.

So if you follow the tips given in this article, you can choose the right type of server cabinets. Be sure to do your homework to better understand the full setup and you’ll be able to make an informed decision.
