Haunted Hospitals in Massachusettes

Plymouth County Hospital / Hanson Tuberculosis Hospital is located in Hanson Massachusetts. The hospital was built in the late 1910s, primarily as a tuberculosis hospital. The facility was operational from 1923 until it closed its doors permanently in 1991.

In 1982, the hospital officially became Cranberry Specialty Hospital and welcomed terminally ill people. In 1991, the last remaining patients were transferred to a different location. The Spanish-style architecture of Plymouth County Hospital is very different from most New England hospitals, making it unique. The Spanish-style design gives it an almost ominous appearance.

The sprawling 56-acre property was sold from Plymouth County to the City of Hanson in 1999. In 2001, 23 of the 56 acres were sold to Baran Partners who planned to build townhomes and an assisted living facility, but those plans never were fulfilled. .

Many people who have visited the hospital believe that it is, in fact, haunted. Strange noises, eerie screams and whispers have been heard both inside and outside the building. Laughter and playing music are also commonly heard sounds. A general feeling of being watched or not alone when approaching the building is also commonly reported.

Strange EMF readings were reportedly recorded during a paranormal investigation of the property even though there is no electricity in the building. Reports of equipment, such as video cameras, failing or shutting down are also quite common. Orbs captured in images have also been documented. Whether visitors experience a strange phenomenon or not, one thing is for sure and that is that everyone who visits agrees that the place has a very spooky feel.

Haunted or not, one thing is for sure and that is that the widespread feeling after visiting or viewing photos of the hospital is that it is indeed a spooky place. Given the history of the hospital and the strange Spanish-style design, it’s hard not to feel that way about the place.

Unfortunately, the fire destroyed the north wing of the building in 2004. A second fire occurred a year and a half after the first and turned out to be an arson. In addition to the fires, the hospital has also been the victim of a lot of vandalism over the years. As a result, the grounds are heavily patrolled by the Hanson Police Department. Illegal entry to the property is illegal.
